Science enrichment programs

science_enrichmentPurpose:
To provide to the Haynes children science-based programs that augment the grade-level science curriculum, based on Massachusetts educational frameworks. Our aim is to give the children unique hands-on experiences that allow them to further explore concepts taught in the classrooms. Our programs focus on: electricity, animals, chemistry, lights and lasers, machines, astronomy, sea life, rocks and minerals, insects, weather, and physical science.

HOP Sponsors all of these Science Enrichment programs.

Following are the grade-level programs that are being delivered to the students during the 2008-2009 school year coordinated by Jeri Tarini and Jennifer Herndon.

Tuesday Oct. 27th 2009

Weather Workshop with Grade 2 and 5:

What is weather? What is air pressure and how does it affect weather? How does lightning formed? In this workshop we use hands-on experiments to demonstrate basic science principles that effect our weather. This is a fun way to get students to look at weather a whole new way.

Circuits and Electricity Workshops

4th grade

Tuesday Oct 20th

What is electricity and how is it made? Can you really make lightning? Can you generate a strong magnetic field using only a small battery. What are ohms and volts? In this exciting show we use audience participation, fun props, and spectacular demonstrations with such devices as a Van de Graff generator, Tesla coil, and even a light saber to show basic laws of electricity and magnetism. A great follow up is the Circuits and Electricity hands on classroom workshop.

Circuits and Electricity Workshop

How do you use circuits and electronics to get electricity to do what you want it to do? How does a motor work? What does a fuse do? In this hands on workshop the class uses a unique electronic building system to quickly design and build basic electronic circuits. They learn about basic electrical components such as resistors, switches, photo sensors, lights, motors, and electromagnets. Finally they take what they learn to build their own electrical devices.
