The ceramic kiln has been firing away throughout the winter. Students in grades one through five have been following their clay work as it goes through two transformations in the kiln with the use of heat. (Around 1,891 degrees Fahrenheit!)
Students in grade one made two projects in clay this year. The first was a three dimensional pot made by turning and pinching with hands and fingers. The second project involved drawing fish and transferring the drawings onto clay slabs, then cutting tiles. We'd like to share some of the fish with you here before they swim home! Enjoy! Wecome to Haynes Art Class.

Our project focused on Modernism. We examined paintings by artists who worked in the United States and Europe during the Modern period, which began around 1910. Artists Piet Mondrian, Sonia Delaunay and Wasily Kandinsky all used shapes, lines and planes in their work. Kandinsky refered to shapes as being one of the few truly universal languages, shared by all people around the world. The students created compositions using both geometric and irregular shapes. It was exciting to work with acrylic paint on paper prepared with gesso. We discussed relationships between colors, as well as tints and shades. We hope you enjoy looking at these paintings!
